My love for faces brought me to photography 10 years ago and since then I have worked with families, couples, individuals, and other artists to capture who they are in a still image. It made sense for me to move into painting, as my love for art history has been life long and my desire to do art “with my hands” (aka, no screens) has always been a goal. Learning watercolor was an exciting new means to get to a final portrait. If my photos capture what is authentically ‘you’ my paintings seek to capture ‘why’ your authentic self is so exciting. I use bright gouache highlighted by flourishes of pen and colored pencil to dream up happy odes to celebrities, movies, pets, and family members that we love. This new interaction of photographer and painter is where ‘Art Cuyler’ was born — Cuyler is both my father’s name and my niece’s name, a symbol of old and new, masculine and feminine, real and imagined, paint and light, paper and pixels.
